Children are often drawn to technology for its fun games and entertaining cartoons, but not all kids use it responsibly. Some can accidentally stumble into the darker side of the internet, leading to risky and hazardous situations for themselves and their families.
Barbara Gemen, a woman from the Netherlands, discovered that her 8-year-old son had secretly purchased a range of questionable items, including an AK-47, from the Dark Web without her knowledge.
Barbara, who works as a ‘human resources expert,’ revealed that her son had developed a keen interest in the internet and had been learning hacking skills from a young age. Initially, the 8-year-old engaged in minor activities like hacking websites and ordering small items without paying for them.
However, his behavior took a troublesome turn as he started communicating with malicious individuals through video games and assisting them in illicit money transactions.
Barbara mentioned that her son used coded phrases to avoid raising suspicions, such as saying “Pitt is coming to our place” whenever she entered the room.
The situation escalated when her son ordered an actual AK-47 through the dark web and had it shipped from Poland to Bulgaria to evade detection. Upon receiving the illegal weapon at her doorstep, Barbara promptly contacted the police and handed over the firearm.
No legal action was taken, but Barbara has since taken it upon herself to educate and protect her son from the potential dangers of technology. She is now diligently learning about cybersecurity to safeguard her child.
