Lahore Police Bust Gang Scamming Passengers with Phony inDrive App

In a notable crackdown, the police in Lahore have successfully dismantled a deceptive gang that exploited citizens through fraudulent inDrive taxi bookings. This operation resulted in the arrest of four individuals who allegedly posed as inDrive drivers, using this guise to swipe valuables from unsuspecting passengers. Authorities seized a trove of stolen items and urged residents to prioritize safety by exclusively using the official inDrive platform when booking rides.

The police have revealed that the suspects ran fraudulent accounts, luring potential passengers into a trap. A particularly alarming incident occurred when a customer scheduled a ride on Jail Road, Lahore. Instead of being whisked away safely, the passenger found themselves robbed of valuables totaling millions of rupees, with the alleged driver making a hasty getaway.

The aftermath of this robbery saw the victim promptly dial the Police Helpline 15. Thanks to the vigilant efforts of a virtual patrol officer from the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, AI-driven tracking technologies and advanced surveillance systems were employed to trace the suspects’ vehicle. This crucial information was quickly passed to the Lahore police, enabling them to spring into action and apprehend the criminals.

During the operation, law enforcement seized not only the suspect’s vehicle but also various luxury items, unlicensed firearms, and more than 200 SIM cards. Initial investigations suggest that this gang skillfully masqueraded as inDrive drivers to perpetrate their thefts.

In another troubling episode of fraud linked to inDrive, a driver vanished with food and expensive utensils worth Rs 45,000, leaving a family distressed and highlighting growing concerns about the safety of online taxi services, even for deliveries.

This decisive operation was led by SHO Gulberg Lahore, Taimoor Abbas, resulting in the arrests of Faisal, Farhan, Kashif, and Waleed. Law enforcement recovered a cache of stolen electronics, clothing, and other valuables estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of rupees, along with two unlicensed firearms.

Farhan, the alleged mastermind behind these fraudulent activities, had a background as a software operator at the inDrive App Office. Reports indicate that he established fake accounts for his associates, leveraging his tech expertise to facilitate their criminal endeavors. Interestingly, he had previously been employed by Careem, another well-known ride-hailing service that has since suspended operations in Pakistan.

“This operation was made possible through prompt cooperation from the inDrive team,” stated SHO Taimoor Abbas. “Their provision of vital digital traces was instrumental in tracking and apprehending the suspects. As criminals increasingly exploit digital platforms for their schemes, collaborations between tech firms and law enforcement have never been more crucial.”

In light of these incidents, officials are strongly advising the public to book rides solely through the official inDrive application. By doing so, you not only protect yourself from potential fraud but also contribute to a safer community for everyone. It’s a reminder that staying vigilant and informed can significantly enhance our safety in this digital age.
