Apple has rolled out the macOS Sonoma 14.4 update, which brings a variety of fresh features and tackles over 50 security concerns.
Key Features of macOS Sonoma 14.4 Update
Among the noteworthy additions in this update is the integration of written transcripts for episodes in Apple Podcasts. These transcripts are automatically created, enabling users to follow along while listening to an episode. The text is searchable and supports several accessibility functions such as Text Size modification, Contrast Boost, and VoiceOver assistance. This feature is also accessible on iOS 17.4.
However, unlike its iOS counterpart, the Apple Podcasts desktop app does not sync with the episode. Additionally, the desktop version currently lacks the ability to click on text to start playing the episode from a specific segment.
Furthermore, Safari now provides users with the choice to show only icons for bookmarked websites on the Favorites Bar. Users can enable this feature by right-clicking on a favorite and choosing “Show Title”.
Apple has also adjusted video calls by deactivating reactions by default to prevent undesired animations. The update also introduces a variety of new emojis such as a mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, people shaking their heads, and various people and body emojis in varying orientations.
Improvements in Security for macOS Sonoma 14.4
The macOS Sonoma 14.4 update comes with remedies for more than 50 security vulnerabilities, including two actively exploited issues. One of these vulnerabilities lies in the Kernel (CVE-2024-23225) and the other in RTKIT (CVE-2024-23296), which could enable attackers with specific capabilities to circumvent kernel memory protections. These vulnerabilities were also identified in iPhones and iPads, and have been resolved in the recent iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 updates.
Safari 17.4 has been patched for six security flaws, and Apple has also released updates for macOS Ventura 13.6.5 and macOS Monterey 12.7.4, concentrating on enhancing security elements.
