Apple’s macOS 14.4.1 Sonoma Update Rolled Out To Address USB Hub And Java Problems

Apple has introduced the macOS 14.4.1 Sonoma update to tackle issues related to USB Hubs and Java applications.

Resolving USB Hub and Java Concerns in macOS 14.4.1 by Apple

The latest update aims to fix existing issues rather than introducing new features. Following the rollout of macOS 14.4 earlier this month, which featured more than 50 security patches, users faced problems with malfunctioning USB Hubs leading to issues like automatic disconnections or complete failure, affecting peripherals such as Ethernet connections, monitors, and external hard drives.

Apple has addressed these issues with the macOS 14.4.1 update. The release notes highlight that the update resolves problems with external displays connected via USB hubs not functioning properly. In case your accessories are not working post-update, Apple recommends power cycling them.

Another challenge encountered by users with macOS 14.4 was Java applications crashing post-installation. The macOS 14.4.1 update now deals with this problem, ensuring the smooth operation of applications like JetBrains after updating.

Furthermore, macOS 14.4 experienced issues with audio plugins leading to failures in opening or validating them, impacting the usage of professional music software on Mac devices. This resulted in developers such as Kilohearts and MixWave cautioning users about Audio Unit (AU) issues in macOS 14.4 and advising against updating. Apple has tackled these problems associated with copy-protected Audio Unit plugins in macOS 14.4.1, allowing music applications to function correctly.

Improvements in Security in macOS 14.4.1 Sonoma

The macOS 14.4.1 Sonoma update, with the build number 23E224, incorporates fixes for 2 security vulnerabilities. One of the vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-1580) concerns the CoreMedia framework utilized with audio/video devices, while the second vulnerability relates to WebRTC (CVE-2024-1580). Both vulnerabilities permitted arbitrary code execution through image processing, which was remedied by rectifying an out-of-bounds write with enhanced input validation. Nick Galloway from Google Project Zero discovered and reported these vulnerabilities to Apple.

Furthermore, Apple has unleashed macOS Ventura 13.6.6, containing the same security patches. Safari 17.4.1, accessible through updates for macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura, mitigates the WebRTC vulnerability. Last week, the iOS 17.4.1 launch also rectified the aforementioned security concerns.

In other news, the US Government has initiated legal proceedings against Apple for purported monopolistic behaviors in the smartphone sector. Refer to prior coverage for additional details.
