In a special showcase at the Microsoft Campus, Microsoft unveiled Copilot+ PCs as the newest Windows computers equipped with advanced AI features.
A significant amount of the details disclosed by Microsoft during the event had previously been leaked unofficially.
The initial Copilot+ PCs will be equipped with Qualcomm processors, with the possibility of Intel and AMD alternatives emerging later this year.
The leaked confirmed specifications consist of:
- Minimum 16GB of RAM
- Minimum 256GB of SSD storage
- Integrated NPU
Nevertheless, Microsoft has not disclosed the primary prerequisites for Copilot yet.
Microsoft is not only unveiling two novel Surface devices, the Surface Pro and the Surface Laptop, but is also collaborating with partners such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, and Asus to launch Copilot+ PCs in the upcoming months.
During the presentation, Microsoft asserted that the new laptops exhibit a 58% speed enhancement compared to MacBook Airs with an M3 processor, though it remains uncertain if this performance boost applies universally to all Copilot+ PCs or specifically to those equipped with Qualcomm’s ARM chips.
Microsoft has also pledged enhanced battery life, with devices supporting up to 15 hours of web browsing. However, the actual outcomes may vary. Typically, ARM-powered Windows PCs tend to offer superior battery performance compared to Intel or AMD models.
Unveiling of Recall, Formerly Known as AI File Explorer
The forthcoming generation of Copilot+ PCs will introduce a variety of exclusive AI utilities and functions.
Recall emerged as the focal point of the event. While features like Cocreator in Paint and Live Captions were referenced, Recall emerged as a novel aspect.
Recall functions as a memory aid that enables Windows users to access an AI-operated record of their PC operations through natural language inquiries.
It bears a resemblance to the Timeline feature in Windows 10, which Microsoft ceased supporting in 2021.
As per Microsoft, Recall captures screen snapshots every few seconds, encrypts and stores them locally, enabling users to explore or browse through a timeline of their past activities.
Following this, the AI component analyzes selected snapshots, allowing users to engage with the content, such as searching within videos or online meetings.
Microsoft assures users of control over Recall, including the option to exclude applications or websites, pause, cease, or erase content at any time. Recall respects DRM-protected content and private browsing in Microsoft Edge, though clarity is required on its handling of private sessions in other browsers.
However, sensitive data like passwords, codes, financial details, and social security numbers may be captured by Recall.
The feature offered by Recall is reminiscent of concepts from films like Minority Report, featuring an all-knowing AI characteristic displaying a user’s PC operations to authorized users.
To address privacy concerns, Microsoft stresses that Recall operates exclusively on local devices without utilizing content for AI training. Recall is presently in a preview phase, supporting a limited selection of languages like English, German, and Japanese.
According to Microsoft, Recall necessitates a minimum of 50 GB of available hard drive space, utilizing 25 GB for storage, estimated to contain roughly three months’ worth of activity data that users can adjust in settings.
Closing Remarks
The initial series of Qualcomm-powered Copilot+ PCs is poised to launch in the forthcoming weeks and months, with Intel and AMD variants anticipated later this year.
The standout aspect of this new lineup, Recall, furnishes users with a transparent view of their operations. Though access is restricted, situations where others might seek access, such as border crossings or legal inquiries, could emerge.
