Ecosia, the environmentally conscious search engine, commemorated Earth Day by releasing its desktop web browser that is compatible with both Windows and macOS operating systems.
The browser, which Ecosia asserts is solar-powered, generates 25Wh of solar energy every time it is in operation. Ecosia channels all its earnings into planting trees and sustainable energy projects, achieving the significant milestone of planting 200 million trees worldwide recently.
As stated by TechCrunch, the Ecosia browser is built upon Google’s open-source Chromium project, offering a familiar interface akin to Chrome. However, Ecosia’s browser itself is not open-source.
The New Tab page is vibrant, allowing users to customize the background with wallpapers from Ecosia’s tree planting initiatives.
Users have the ability to carry out web searches directly from the tab page and can choose to transfer browsing history, favorites, passwords, and autocomplete data from other browsers.
The page also showcases sponsored links for shopping, with the proceeds benefiting climate projects by Ecosia. While this is a commendable endeavour, there could be concerns related to user privacy. For more details, users are encouraged to review Ecosia’s privacy policy.
The new tab page presents climate impact data such as tree plantations and donation amounts, along with convenient shortcuts to financial reports and tree planting projects. Users can personalize their new tab experience by adjusting various sections in the quick settings panel.
Default Search Engine
Ecosia is configured as the default search engine, but users have the flexibility to switch to Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Brave through the settings.
Built-in Ad Blocker
The browser comes equipped with a built-in ad blocker that filters ads utilizing lists such as Anti Adblock filters, Easy Privacy Antitracker, EasyList, and uBlock filters. Users also have the option to manage the “acceptable ads” feature.
Data collection by the Ecosia browser involves transmitting anonymous browsing usage and crash reports. Users can opt-out of these options in the Privacy and Security settings.
The browser supports extensions from the Chrome Web Store, and for more control over content blocking, users can install the uBlock Origin add-on and disable the built-in ad blocker.
Ecosia AI Chat
Ecosia’s browser introduces an AI Chat feature powered by OpenAI, offering chatbot capabilities that respond to queries, summarize text, and store chat history within the browser.
Chat data is retained by OpenAI for up to 30 days for internal and legal purposes. Ecosia AI Chat is accessible on specific browsers and can be accessed from the Ecosia website.
The browser is downloadable for Windows 10 or later and macOS Catalina 10.15 or later from the official Ecosia website. A web installer is available; users should ensure to deselect the option to run the app at startup. Ecosia browser is also compatible with Android and iOS devices.
While Ecosia browser bears many resemblances to Chrome, it might encounter challenges in enticing users away from other popular browsers due to a lack of distinctive features. For those placing significance on privacy, alternatives like DuckDuckGo, Brave, or Firefox could be more appealing.
To effectively attract users to their browser, developers may need to introduce more innovative and unique features to differentiate their product.
