If you accidentally leave your freezer door open, you risk creating a big mess in your kitchen. [Guy Dupont] had a freezer that would often fail to close properly, leading to frustrating incidents. As a result, he devised a highly digital remedy.
This project involves pairing an ESP32 with a reed switch that is triggered by a magnet attached to the freezer door. When the freezer door is open, the reed switch remains open as well. The ESP32 periodically checks the status of the switch, and if the door is found open during two consecutive checks, an alarm is triggered. A notification is then sent to [Guy] via WiFi so that he can address the issue. The setup operates on a 400 mAh battery, lasting just over three weeks while checking the door status at two-minute intervals.
From [Guy]’s YouTube video, it seems like the freezer door is getting stuck against the wall. Although adjusting the freezer’s position might help, it’s likely that he has already considered this option. As [Guy] humorously puts it, “That would make for a very dull YouTube video, right?”
This isn’t the first time we’ve showcased a fridge alarm, and it probably won’t be the last, as long as the refrigeration gods are willing.
