Google has upgraded how Chrome notifies users about potentially dangerous file downloads. While the blocking functionality remains unchanged, Chrome will now display full-screen security alerts to users.
Chrome restricts downloads identified as harmful by its Safe Browsing feature. However, sometimes the accuracy of these identifications may be uncertain, leading to the prevention of harmless files.
Google has recently implemented some modifications to Chrome’s Safe Browsing feature. Here are two notable updates:
Enhancements in How Chrome Manages Risky Downloads
Google Chrome will soon show a new cautionary message when users try to download potentially risky files. Initially, the download will be obstructed.
Upon blocking a download, Chrome will mark it in the download list with a notification stating “dangerous download blocked” in red text.
By clicking on the download, further details will be disclosed, like Chrome flagging the file as “dangerous.”
At this point, users have limited choices, such as erasing the download from history or accessing a help link. Deleting the download will eliminate it entirely.
To continue with the download, users must follow these steps:
- Access chrome://downloads/ in the address bar or go to Menu > Downloads.
- Tap on the menu icon beside the flagged file and opt for “download dangerous file” from the menu. Chrome will then display a full-screen warning.
- Click on “continue anyway.”
- Select a reason for downloading the file from three choices:
- I created this file.
- I trust the site.
- I’m willing to accept the risk.
- Press the download button.
Irrespective of the reason chosen, the file will commence downloading. It is crucial to compare this new procedure with Chrome’s current behavior.
In the current Chrome versions, the download is also blocked, but users are solely provided with the option to discard it in the download window. A prompt gives them the opportunity to proceed with the download.
In essence, there is no full-page alert or a necessity to justify downloading the file in the existing Chrome setup.
Summary
The effectiveness of these improved security measures in curbing malicious downloads remains to be seen. The requirement to specify a reason for downloading a file introduces complexity, especially when all options result in the same outcome.
Users still have the choice to consider using an alternative browser if a specific download encounters issues in Chrome.
