New AI-based tools for photo editing will soon be accessible to Google Photos users. Google has revealed that upcoming features like Magic Editor, Photo Unblur, and Magic Eraser will be rolled out to all users from the following month onwards.
Prior to this, these AI editing functionalities were restricted to owners of Google Pixel devices and subscribers of Google One services.
Let’s take a quick look at each tool:
- Photo Unblur — Enhances the quality of blurry images by reducing or eliminating blurriness.
- Portrait Light — Adjusts the brightness and lighting orientation in portrait shots.

- Magic Editor — A feature previously restricted to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro devices that empowers users to manipulate various aspects in images, such as changing the color of the sky or shifting objects within the frame.
While Magic Editor is fully functional on all Pixel gadgets, individuals without Pixel devices will be limited to 10 saves per month. Users in need of more edits can opt for unlimited access by subscribing to Google One Premium (2 TB and higher).
In addition to these tools, Google Photos also provides other AI capabilities like:

Availability Date for the Tools
Google is set to launch these exciting tools for all users beginning May 15, 2024. The rollout process is expected to span several months to reach all users.
To utilize these tools, devices must meet specific hardware requirements, comprising Android 8.0 or newer, or iOS 15 or later on mobile devices. Certain features may necessitate a minimum of 3GB of RAM on both Android and iOS gadgets, with Magic Editor mandating specifically 4GB of RAM and a 64-bit chipset.
Some editing features may not be accessible via the web platform as certain functionalities are restricted to the Google Photos mobile applications for Android and iOS.
Closing Thoughts
AI-powered photo editing tools can greatly enhance the quality of images efficiently. While they may not meet professional editing standards, they are beneficial for the everyday needs of many users.
It’s important to note that tools like Magic Editor may demand an active Internet connection for operation, although it is unclear whether the processing takes place locally or through Google’s servers.
The emergence of various AI-driven image creation and editing tools reflects a growing trend towards augmenting photos with AI technology.
