Notable reductions have been implemented by Microsoft in the download size of updates for Windows 10, leading to accelerated download speeds.
During the year 2021, Microsoft unveiled a 40% decrease in the update magnitude for Windows 11 through the utilization of innovative compression technology. This optimization is now being expanded to Windows 10, starting from the most recent version, 22H2.
A recent preliminary update with the identifier KB5036979 showcases that the monthly cumulative update packages for Windows 10 will witness a 20% diminution in size once the alterations come into effect on April 23, 2024.
These more compact updates deliver advantages such as swifter downloads, decreased bandwidth consumption, and enhanced performance especially on slower networks.
Anticipated Changes
- The update KB5036892, which was rolled out on April 9, has a volume of 830 megabytes.
- On the other hand, the release of KB5036979 on April 23 reflects a volume of 650 megabytes.
The 180-megabyte difference illustrates a decrease of 21.6%, which falls short of the 40% reduction seen in Windows 11. Nevertheless, forthcoming updates may achieve a comparable reduction level.
It is important to note that the comparison performed by Microsoft is between a complete cumulative update and a preview update, which does not encompass new security patches set for release in May 2024.
Further strides in minimizing the update size may bring it closer to the 40% objective set for Windows 11.
Requisites
Microsoft asserts that all upcoming cumulative updates for Windows 10 will be more compact, boosting the overall update process.
