In June, Disney Plus to Enforce More Stringent Regulations Against Password Sharing

The CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, has confirmed that Disney will soon implement new guidelines to discourage users from sharing their account information. The crackdown on password sharing for Disney Plus is set to commence in June.

This initiative has been under development for a while, with plans originating last year. The introduction of these new measures initially impacted Disney Plus subscribers in Canada, as revealed in November. In January of this year, U.S. users were also notified about modifications in the terms of service, especially concerning the sharing of login credentials with individuals outside their households. While primarily focusing on new users, these rules became applicable to all subscribers in March.

Disney Plus Begins Clampdown on Password Sharing in June

According to The Verge, Disney’s chief financial officer, Hugh Johnston, disclosed during an earnings call in February that individuals sharing accounts would need to procure their own subscriptions. He also discussed the possibility for subscribers to add extra members for a fee.

Additional information has emerged regarding Disney Plus’ restrictions on password sharing. In an interview with CNBC, Iger mentioned that the initial crackdown on password sharing would kick off in June 2024. The constraints are expected to become tougher prior to full enforcement for all users, anticipated in September.

    Subscription Choices for Disney Plus

Let’s explore Disney’s streaming services. Disney Plus offers two primary subscription options. The Disney+ Basic plan, available for $7.99 per month, includes advertisements. In contrast, the ad-free Disney+ Premium plan is priced at $13.99/month and permits unlimited downloads on up to 10 devices.

Disney recently integrated Hulu in its bundle offerings to entice a larger audience. For instance, the Disney Bundle Duo Basic plan with ads is accessible for $9.99 per month, whereas the ad-free Disney Bundle Duo Premium is offered at $19.99/month. Sports fans have the choice of the Disney Bundle Trio Basic bundle, priced at $14.99/month, which comprises ESPN+ in addition to Disney+ and Hulu, all with ads. For an ad-free experience with the Disney Bundle Trio Premium bundle, the cost is $24.99/month.

Streaming services have experienced several price hikes over the past year, with the introduction of advertisements presenting additional challenges. Netflix was the first to address password sharing among its users. Despite initial reservations, this move proved to be successful, drawing over 23 million monthly users to its ad-supported plan as of January 2024. Consequently, Disney seems keen to replicate this success. Although not advantageous for consumers financially, this transition was likely inevitable from a business perspective. Iger recognized Netflix as the primary standard in streaming, with Disney firmly holding the No. 2 spot.
