Microsoft 365 Enters the VPN Market With New Service

In order to utilize the VPN service, individuals need to install the Microsoft Defender application on a compatible gadget and enable its privacy protection feature.

Once the VPN is activated, users will be linked to a Microsoft server that provides 50 gigabytes of data usage per month. The application interface will display the duration until the data usage is reset.

It should be kept in mind that the language used within the application may differ from the default language of the device, with limited possibilities for customization.

The interface is designed for ease of use, showing the total and remaining data usage, the number of days until the next reset, and the visibility of your location. Additionally, it will issue warnings if users connect to an unsecure network and allow them to designate trusted networks.

However, in contrast to premium VPN services, Microsoft’s solution does not offer advanced functions like server selection, a kill switch, or split tunneling.

Automated split tunneling is provided for specific services such as YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify. The primary objective of Microsoft’s VPN service is to guarantee secure connections, especially on public networks.

Microsoft collects a restricted set of data, encompassing the duration of VPN utilization, active bandwidth, and detection of potentially malicious Wi-Fi hotspots to protect user anonymity.

Although Microsoft Defender Privacy Protection can be advantageous for Microsoft 365 subscribers, it may present restrictions in comparison to alternative VPN providers. The VPN predominantly concentrates on securing internet connections, and the monthly data cap should suffice for most users, with exceptions for specified websites.
