Microsoft Improves Windows 10 with Windows Spotlight & Lock Screen Content

The latest KB5035941 update released by Microsoft for the Windows 10 Release Preview channel is currently in the testing phase and will soon roll out to all Windows 10 devices.

This update sets itself apart from the usual security and bug fix patches by introducing significant modifications to the operating system. Moreover, it includes initiatives to motivate users to transition to Windows 11.

Microsoft made this announcement on the official Windows Insider blog.

Windows Spotlight and Lock Screen Enhancements

An important addition in this update is the integration of content for the desktop and Lock screen. Windows Spotlight now provides support for desktop backgrounds, offering users the option to select a picture, solid color, or a slideshow background.

Windows Spotlight presents dynamic wallpapers sourced from Microsoft, allowing Windows 10 to regularly alternate wallpapers, aligning its functionalities with Windows 11.

Users can activate this feature in Settings > Personalization > Background > Personalize your background > Windows Spotlight. By simply right-clicking on the desktop and choosing personalize, users can conveniently access this preference.

The Lock screen is also receiving an update with the inclusion of “weather, sports, traffic, and finance content.” Users can enable this feature in Settings > Personalization > Lock screen so the content is displayed.

Existing options enable users to alter the background, select an app for detailed lock screen information, and showcase quick status updates from various apps.

    Additional Windows 11 Upgrade Incentive

Microsoft is intensifying its push to encourage Windows 10 users to transition to Windows 11, particularly with the imminent end of support for Windows 10. While some devices do not meet the new system requirements of Windows 11, there are many PCs that qualify but have yet to make the switch.

Specifics on how the upgrade offer will be presented to users are scarce, with Microsoft hinting that users might receive a prompt encouraging them to upgrade upon logging in. This could involve a full-screen pop-up similar to what was observed in February 2024 or a different method.

Recent upgrade notifications for Windows 10 featured a unique black pattern design, emphasizing the significance of upgrading the operating system.

Windows 10 users may prolong their support until 2025, potentially incurring an additional cost, although Microsoft has not disclosed specific details yet.
