Every iteration of Windows ultimately culminates in its conclusion. For Windows 11, this transpires two years post its public release.
- Microsoft will halt all security patches and any additional updates for that specific version.
- Microsoft may automatically transition the system to a newer version that remains supported.
This approach is advantageous for the majority of users. Systems that have lost support may harbor unresolved security vulnerabilities, rendering them susceptible to cyber threats, particularly if they are routinely connected to the web.
Nonetheless, some users prefer to maintain authority over the timing of their system upgrades. This could stem from scheduling or testing preferences, making automatic updates inconvenient for them.
Which iterations of Windows 11 are impacted: 21H2 and 22H2
Today, Microsoft declared that computers operating on the original version or the initial feature update of Windows 11 will be upgraded automatically next month.
What are these two iterations?
- Windows 11, version 21H2 is aimed at Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise systems exclusively.
- Windows 11, version 22H2 is tailored for Home and Pro users exclusively.
When will this occur?
The final update for these iterations is scheduled for October 2024, with the last security patches planned for release on October 8, 2024.
Post October 8, 2024, Windows Update will automatically download and install Windows 11, version 23H2 on the affected devices.
Are there any exclusions?
Automatic updates will apply solely to unmanaged devices, which typically indicates those not supervised by an IT department.
Other potential exclusions include:
- Devices that do not meet the minimum specifications for Windows 11.
- Devices with Windows Update deactivated or set to prevent automatic updates.
Upgrading manually to a new version of Windows is quite straightforward. Simply navigate to Start > Settings > Windows Update, and click on the “Check for updates” button. If a more recent version is present, it will be shown, allowing you to download and install it.
If you encounter any challenges, you can directly acquire the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or Windows 11 Installation Media from Microsoft.
Windows 11, version 23H2 introduces the Copilot feature, closely mirroring the online Copilot chat. While it may not be revolutionary for Windows users, it incorporates some new elements like the Windows Backup application, intended to back up specific folders and data, along with several minor enhancements.
