Microsoft to Extend Support for Traditional Outlook for Windows Until 2029

Microsoft has officially announced that the conventional edition of Outlook for Windows will remain in use until at least 2029, bringing comfort to users of the software.

The recent unveiling of the modern Outlook for Windows sparked worry among users of the traditional version. Microsoft revealed its intentions to substitute the current Mail and Calendar application with this new software, in addition to maintaining the traditional Outlook program.

Initially, there was ambiguity surrounding the fate of the traditional Outlook application as Microsoft detailed its migration strategy.

Nevertheless, Microsoft has now clarified that users can continue utilizing the classic version of Outlook until at least 2029.

The Outlook for Windows Transition Roadmap

The transition to the new Outlook for Windows and the retirement of the classic Outlook application will unfold in three distinct phases. The present stage, per Microsoft, is the “Opt in” phase.

Throughout this period, both individual and corporate users have the option to adopt the new Outlook application. The new software will not be automatically enabled, necessitating users to select it by utilizing the “try the new Outlook” feature within the traditional program.

Users can easily revert to the classic application through a toggle option present in both programs. Microsoft also offers a feedback channel for users switching back to the traditional Outlook app.

Once the new Outlook application achieves general availability, it will exit the preview stage, and users will qualify for regular technical assistance.

The subsequent phase entails a transition from opt-in to opt-out, making the new Outlook application the default choice on Windows platforms. Microsoft pledges to issue a minimum of 12 months’ notification before this transition takes effect in production environments.

Throughout the opt-out phase, users have the flexibility to persist with the traditional Outlook program if they wish.

The final phase, termed cutover, eradicates the ability to switch back to the classic Outlook app. Consequently, all fresh installations of Outlook from Microsoft 365 subscriptions will incorporate the new Outlook for Windows.

Microsoft guarantees continual support for existing installations of the traditional Outlook application until at least 2029.

Users will receive early notification, with a minimum of one year’s advance notice, before proceeding to the third and final phase of the migration scheme.

By 2024, the new Outlook client is anticipated to supplant Mail and Calendar. Critics have voiced reservations about the modern Outlook client, pointing out its diminished functionalities compared to the traditional version. Furthermore, reports suggest that the new application is slower and contains advertisements, unlike the ad-free classic program.

Rival Proton has alleged that Microsoft’s new Outlook application serves as a data collection instrument.
