There are rumors about Microsoft releasing the next version of Windows, potentially named Windows 12, in 2024. It is expected to have a strong integration of artificial intelligence.
Reports from Windows Central suggest that the upcoming Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10 may be Microsoft’s first AI PCs. It is said that these devices will have a neural processing unit (NPU) specifically designed to handle AI operations.
Rumors suggest that the Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10 may be available in both Intel and Arm-based options. The Arm versions are expected to be powered by a custom Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series chip, known internally as CADMUS, tailored for the next version of Windows.
These ARM-powered Surface devices are anticipated to rival Apple Silicon in terms of battery life, performance, and security.
The new Surface Laptop is reportedly undergoing a design update, with a thinner bezel, rounded display corners, and additional ports.
The Surface Pro 10 is rumored to offer a brighter display with HDR support. There are also reports of a variant with a lower resolution, potentially aimed at more affordable versions of the device.
It is important to note that Microsoft’s upcoming Surface devices are not expected to be the only products with dedicated NPU chips onboard. However, it is uncertain whether Microsoft will make NPU a system requirement for its Windows operating system.
Possibly, Windows 12 could simply be an enhanced variant of Windows 11 optimized for AI. More details are expected to be announced by Microsoft in the near future.
According to the report, Microsoft has more Surface laptops and devices in the pipeline, but it remains to be seen if these will help boost the performance of the Surface device section at Microsoft.
As of now, none of this information has been officially confirmed by Microsoft.
