Notably, these updates could take place well ahead of the actual end of support for the operating system.
Microsoft has officially confirmed the imposition of updates to Windows 11 version 23H2 on the dedicated Windows 11 Release Information platform, declaring, “Windows 11, version 23H2, also referred to as the Windows 11 2023 Update, is commencing a new stage of deployment. We have initiated the automatic update of eligible Windows 11 systems to version 23H2.”
As per the announcement, the updates will be executed automatically, specifically targeting Windows 11 devices that are either at or nearing the end of servicing, employing machine learning-based training.
Essentially, if your current Windows 11 version is 22H2 or an earlier edition, there is a likelihood that Windows 11 version 23H2 will be automatically integrated into your system, regardless of your preference.
While there is minimal justification to refrain from installing the update to guarantee system support, this methodology strips users of their autonomy.
Postponing the Update
If more time is required, the forced update installation can be delayed. Though this can be done manually, adoption of the open-source InControl software may be a preferable option for numerous users. Setting a desired Windows version using the tool only necessitates a few clicks.
Windows Update will respect this preference, at least until the corresponding operating system version nears the end of support. Routine updates will persist, however, any feature updates will not be enforced.
An exception arises where 60 days subsequent to the end of servicing, Microsoft will begin to overlook the preference. Subsequently, you may utilize the Windows 11 version for its entire lifespan plus an additional 60 days.
Upon downloading the software, it will promptly notify if you retain jurisdiction over operating system updates. Following this, you can stipulate a desired version and release, engage the “Take Control” feature, and the software will affirm your authority, thereby preventing Windows Update from executing a new feature update on the system.
