Problems Arising During the Installation of Security Updates for Windows 11

An issue concerning the latest Windows Update has been acknowledged by Microsoft, impacting Windows 11 users. Certain users may face challenges when attempting to implement the most recent security patch for their operating system.

The security patch KB5034765 was released on February 13, 2024, as part of the February 2024 Patch Day. This patch represents the latest comprehensive update accessible for Windows 11 devices operating on versions 22H2 and 23H2.

Within this update, a total of 41 security flaws were rectified across these versions of the operating system, with two of them being classified as critical. Furthermore, a notable modification involved relocating the Copilot for Windows symbol to the right-hand side of the taskbar, a feature gradually being introduced to devices that have installed the update.

Despite Microsoft not announcing any existing issues during the initial release, users have reported difficulties with installation, regardless of whether the update was obtained via Windows Update or manually. Even the removal of downloaded Windows Update files does not resolve this issue.

    Encountered Problem – KB5034765:

Several Windows 11 users may encounter problems during the installation of this update. Users might observe the installation failure occurring at 96% completion, along with an error message stating “Something didn’t proceed as intended. No cause for concern – reverting changes. Please ensure your computer remains on” appearing on the screen.

Windows administrators reviewing the Event Log may encounter error code 0x800F0922, confirming the issue.

Microsoft recommends the removal of the hidden folder C:$WinREAgent on the impacted Windows device to address this concern. Subsequent to this deletion, a system restart may be required to finalize the elimination of the folder.

Following this, the security update should be installed without any further hindrances. Administrators may need to navigate to Settings > Windows Update to reinstall the update. Clicking on the “verify for updates” button may be essential to prompt the appearance of the update.

Despite the involvement of the C:$WinREAgent folder in this matter, the Windows Release Health website does not provide a detailed explanation regarding its specific function.

The removal of the $WinREAgent folder is a recognized remedy for update-related challenges on Windows devices. This temporary measure clears temporary files formed during update processes, with the folder being recreated during the subsequent update installation.
