Officials in Punjab have established revised school hours to safeguard students from the escalating health hazards linked to deteriorating pollution conditions. In reaction to the ongoing air quality issues, the Punjab Environment Protection Department has issued prompt instructions for educational establishments to adopt essential precautions.
To tackle the mounting health hazards associated with worsening smog situations, Punjab authorities have modified school schedules to emphasize student wellbeing. The Punjab Environment Protection Department has introduced urgent recommendations for schools and colleges, urging them to initiate appropriate actions in consideration of the elevated air pollution levels.
On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, the Punjab Environmental Protection Authority declared the revised school schedule. Commencing from October 28th until January 31st, 2025, educational institutions will begin classes at 8:45 AM. To enhance student protection, school leaders are advised to hold assemblies indoors to reduce their exposure to poor air quality outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities, keep doors and windows shut to lessen the impact of pollution, and wear masks when necessary to be outdoors. Vehicle owners are urged to keep their vehicles in good condition to help reduce emissions. Furthermore, all fireworks displays are banned until the conclusion of January 2025 under these regulations.
Recent reports by IQAir indicate that Lahore has again been recognized as the most polluted city on the planet, with an Air Quality Index score of 193. This underscores the pressing issues concerning air quality and its effects on public health.
Medical professionals are particularly troubled, urging individuals with respiratory ailments—such as asthma and allergies—to take additional steps to protect their health amid this ongoing air quality crisis.
