The developer of the free password manager KeePass has officially launched version 2.56 of the Windows application. KeePass operates as a local password manager by default, eliminating the need for cloud account or connectivity. Although synchronization functionality is available, it is not obligatory for users to opt for it.
Both a portable version and an installer for KeePass 2.56 are provided. Windows users might encounter a SmartScreen warning, which can be disregarded as it is a false positive.
KeePass: Recent Additions
Version 2.56 introduces a search function to the application’s preferences as one of its new features. A search field now resides at the bottom of the options interface, allowing users to locate matching entries in the options section.
The search feature instantly highlights the initial matching entry as it is typed, and users can navigate between matching items using the Enter key. Despite not showing the number of matching entries, this is not a significant problem due to KeePass’ relatively limited options.
Another new feature enhances the History function of the password manager. It now provides detailed information about changes to an entry, including the timestamp of password changes. Additionally, a new comparison option allows for side-by-side data comparison.
To compare two entries, users can select both by holding the Ctrl key and clicking on them. Once two entries are selected, the compare button becomes active. The history interface also includes a new “more” button with options to select all history entries or delete all historic entries while retaining current and unsaved data sets.
Other smaller enhancements in the new release include improved process memory protection and enhancements to “some report dialogs,” as stated in the official release notes.
