The impending Windows 11 update for 2024 has generated some ambiguity. Although it is presently accessible for Copilot+ PCs, there is still no clear schedule for when it will be made available to the majority of current Windows 11 devices.
Currently, only ARM-based PCs are recognized as Copilot+ devices since Intel and AMD have not yet unveiled their newest processors.
This scenario is expected to change for Intel in October 2024, coinciding with the debut of the Lunar Lake processors. Intel has recently introduced these chips, highlighting their “exceptional performance, cutting-edge x86 energy efficiency, significant graphic enhancements, seamless application compatibility, improved security, and outstanding AI computing capabilities.”
Although benchmark results are not yet available, the release of these processors signifies a major leap towards making Windows AI functionalities accessible not solely for ARM devices.
Windows on ARM encounters several restrictions, especially in relation to application compatibility. Numerous aficionados in the AI sector seem to be eagerly awaiting new processors from AMD and Intel to broaden their options.
Intel has indicated that its Core Ultra 200V series processors will be “equipped to support Copilot+ PC features.” Additionally, these features will be introduced as part of a complimentary update scheduled for November.
Did Intel inadvertently reveal the launch month for Windows 11 version 24H2, or is this an entirely different update? Intel has not clarified this issue, and Microsoft continues to keep the release timelines under wraps.
Here are two potential scenarios for the launch:
- Microsoft may roll out the update in late September as part of that month’s optional upgrade, followed by an official launch on the second Tuesday of October.
- Conversely, Microsoft might introduce the feature update in late October as an optional upgrade, making it broadly available in November.
Intel is slated to officially unveil its processors on September 24, 2024, and over 20 manufacturers are said to be preparing to launch devices, according to Intel.
Concerning features, Intel has detailed the following primary advantages:
- Enhanced thermal management for quieter operation in sleek designs.
- Extended battery life for everyday use.
- Integrated security measures to defend against malware and reduce vulnerabilities.
- Dedicated Intel Arc graphics for superior content creation and smoother portable gaming.
- Quick connectivity features with Intel® Wi-Fi 7 (5 Gig).
- Ability to connect the PC to multiple displays, share files, and recharge the PC via Thunderbolt Share.
- Instant wake and rapid charging capabilities.
- High sustainability benchmarks with an EPEAT Gold certification.
Anticipate the initial benchmark results to be disclosed in September; awaiting these may be advantageous prior to making any purchasing choices.
AMD has yet to confirm the release date for its Strix Point processors, which will also obtain Copilot+ PC certification from Microsoft.
