Upcoming Change to Windows 11 Start Menu with a Floating Side Panel for Information

**Windows 11’s Start Menu to Incorporate Floating Side Panel for Information**

Recently, in a beta version of Windows 11, Microsoft revealed the addition of Start Menu Companions. This new element introduces a sidebar within the Start Menu that can display a range of information, including widgets.

The revamped Windows 11 Start Menu no longer includes features like live tiles and customization options found in the Windows 10 version. Instead, the new layout prioritizes pinned applications at the top and personalized recommendations at the bottom.

Upon its initial launch in 2021, navigating the Windows 11 Start Menu proved to be a challenge. Despite subsequent improvements, some criticisms persist.

**Debut of Start Menu Companions in Windows 11**

Twitter user Albacore uncovered a new feature named Start Menu Companions in Windows 11 Beta build 26212. A shared screenshot on Twitter displayed weather and stock market updates within the floating sidebar.

Users have the flexibility to enable this function via the Settings > Personalization > Start Menu section. They can select which companions to showcase on either side of the Windows 11 Start Menu.

It seems that users retain the choice to deactivate the feature entirely, reverting the Start Menu to its original presentation.

    **Feature Progress**

The development of the Start Companion feature is ongoing, with potential modifications prior to its official launch or a complete removal before reaching stable Windows 11 iterations.

The adaptive cards available to testers are currently limited and resemble a compact version of the Widgets panel. Upon release, this feature could potentially replace widgets entirely.

Introducing support for third-party adaptive cards could enhance the feature’s utility and inclusivity. While Microsoft had initially aimed for third-party widget integration, it remains restricted at present.

Most users might decide to turn off the Start Menu Companions feature unless compelling adaptive cards that genuinely benefit users are introduced later on.

Potential content that could be displayed in this area includes recent downloads, active applications, or notifications.
