Microsoft is experimenting with new restrictions regarding activation on Windows 11, which may impact the operation of its default web browser, Microsoft Edge.
Windows 11 can be configured without a product key, leading to an unactivated status. Although most functions operate normally, there are reminders, a watermark, and limitations on specific customization features such as setting wallpapers. Nonetheless, there are workarounds for this situation.
Windows 11 typically functions well by facilitating program installations, access to the Microsoft Store, system updates, and administrative modifications.
In the days ahead, Microsoft might restrict access to particular Microsoft Edge configurations.
Adjustments in Microsoft Edge Configurations
Recent accounts propose that Microsoft is trialing activation-related constraints in the latest Edge Canary releases. These constraints could prevent entry to certain configurations and display alerts indicating that Windows 11 is not activated correctly.
One way to examine this is by installing Windows 11 without inputting a product key on a virtual machine. Without activation, a prompt in Edge settings will mention: “We notice your Windows is not activated, some customization has been limited”.
This notice appears on all Settings pages. Currently, only a few configurations are limited. One such limitation is the incapacity to modify the “When Edge starts” preference, hindering users from altering how Edge initiates.
This signifies users will be unable to adjust Edge’s default homepage or restore the previous session.
This evaluation is ongoing, with the potential addition of further constraints on browser configurations in subsequent updates.
Reasons behind the Adjustment
Microsoft has not officially clarified the alteration or its rationale. Although it could influence individual users, the primary aim is likely organizations.
Considering that it is effortless to install alternate browsers on Windows 11 like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi, or Opera:
- Open Start.
- Type cmd and press Enter.
- Type winget install Mozilla Firefox and press Enter again.
For organizations, the consequences could carry more weight, particularly if employees are mandated to use Edge. Displaying activation notifications might prompt them to seek clarification or lodge complaints.
