In an upcoming Windows 11 update, the Start Menu will begin displaying promotions for specific apps in the recommended section. These advertisements will be visible to users of unmanaged Windows 11 devices.
Aside from the usual pinned section where icons of apps and games are showcased post-installation, the Start Menu will now incorporate advertisements. This initiative commenced with promotions for Microsoft’s subscription services such as Microsoft 365 earlier in 2023. These ads highlight the advantages of OneDrive and are denoted with an error icon to attract attention upon clicking the profile icon.
Microsoft has confirmed this shift on its support page, mentioning, “The Recommended section of the Start menu will feature select Microsoft Store apps from curated developers, aiding users in discovering exceptional applications.”
The recommended section may also exhibit frequently utilized apps that are not pinned to the Start Menu or taskbar.
Initially, Microsoft presented a screenshot of the endorsed app, 1Password Password Manager, on its Windows blog. Eventually, the design was revised, and now promoted apps are tagged as “promoted” to differentiate them from user-installed applications.
These promotions are seamlessly integrated with frequently used apps, files, and recently added programs, which has led to some confusion as certain advertised apps may necessitate a subscription, like 1Password.
Microsoft stipulates that these advertisements will only be visible on non-managed Windows 11 devices.
How to Deactivate App Advertisements in Windows 11’s Start Menu
Windows 11 users can disable this functionality by adhering to the subsequent steps:
- Commence the Start Menu.
- Opt for Settings.
- Navigate to Personalization > Start.
- Switch off “Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more.”
By executing these directives, users can halt the exhibition of app advertisements in the recommended segment.
In addition to suppressing ads, users can also customize the layout to “more pins” in order to make room for additional pinned applications in the Start Menu. Another alternative is to utilize a third-party Start Menu like Start11, although it is essential to note that this is a paid tool.
