In a recent announcement, WhatsApp has revealed the integration of Passcodes support specifically for iOS users. Last year, this messaging platform, now part of Meta, had first introduced a password-free login feature for Android users.
The adoption of Passcodes has surged due to its advanced security measures, utilizing biometric data (like fingerprints or Face ID) for authentication instead of conventional, easily hackable passwords. Key technology giants such as Apple, Microsoft, and Google, as members of the FIDO Alliance, have strongly advocated for Passcodes. They emphasize the robust security of WebAuthn technology, which securely stores data on the user’s device, replacing less secure methods like SMS-based two-factor authentication and feeble passwords prone to brute force attacks.
Leading companies including Amazon, Twitter, GitHub, Nintendo, and Sony PlayStation have already embraced Passcodes. Moreover, password management tools like 1Password, KeePassXC, and Proton Pass have also integrated this feature. Therefore, WhatsApp’s decision to include Passcodes aims to enhance the security of its users and their data.
Steps to Activate Passcodes for WhatsApp on iOS
1. Open WhatsApp and navigate to Settings > Account.
2. Choose Passcodes > Set up a Passcode.
3. You will have to confirm the setup by using your Screen Lock, such as your device’s PIN, Face ID, or Touch ID.
Once the setup is done, the Passcode will be stored locally on your device.
Please Note: To delete a Passcode, go to Settings > Account > Passcodes, then select the option to Revoke.
Since this feature is currently being rolled out gradually, immediate access to Passcodes may not be possible. It will be gradually extended to all users in the upcoming weeks.
Activating a Passcode for your WhatsApp account allows you to sign in without needing a password. WhatsApp clarifies that this passwordless login method can be used even when your device is offline.
Engadget was informed by WhatsApp’s Head of Product, Alice Newton-Rex, that introducing Passcodes support for iOS is aimed at delivering a more user-friendly login experience while adding an extra layer of security. WhatsApp’s support page states that Passcodes are compatible with all iPhone models (iPhone 8 or newer) running iOS 16 or higher.
The Verge was informed by WhatsApp’s spokesperson Zade Alsawah that desktop users will still have to use their phone’s camera to scan a QR code when attempting to utilize the Linked devices feature. This limitation is in place as Mac, Windows PCs, and WhatsApp Web cannot function as the primary device for an account, a divergence from services like Gmail and Microsoft that allow Passcode storage on computers with features like Windows Hello or Touch ID.
It is worth noting that Bitwarden Password Manager has also included Passcodes support for its mobile apps on both iOS and Android as part of an ongoing beta program.
