Numerous Windows users appreciate utilizing the Microsoft Photos application for viewing their images and videos. Recently, Microsoft announced updates for the Photos application on Windows 11. A notable alteration is the transition from the UWP format to the Windows App SDK. Some users have noticed that the Photos application automatically launches with Windows 11. Although I was unable to verify this on devices running Windows 11 version 24H2, it is possible that Microsoft is still refining this feature or gradually rolling it out to collect user feedback.
Important to note: This update commenced in June for users participating in the Insider program. Now, Microsoft is releasing the new version for stable Windows 11 systems and has indicated that Windows 10 will also obtain this update.
The enhancements are part of version 2024.11050.3002.0 of the Photos application. To check your current version, open the Microsoft Photos application on your device and navigate to Settings; you can find the version number under “about” located at the bottom of that page.
Common issues reported by users of the updated Photos application encompass:
- The application opens automatically when the operating system starts, potentially hindering the PC’s boot time.
- The application might take a longer period to open compared to before.
While having the Photos application open at startup can be advantageous for individuals who utilize it frequently, it can be inconvenient for those who do not, as it might unnecessarily slow down the Windows startup process.
How to prevent the Photos application from launching with Windows
You can leverage built-in administrative tools to modify whether the Photos application operates at startup. Here’s how you can do this:
- Select Start.
- Open the Settings application.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Find Photos in the list.
- Switch Photos to Off.
This will stop the application from launching automatically with Windows 11. It won’t disrupt any functions for those who don’t use the application. However, users who do may experience a delay during the application’s initial launch after this adjustment.
You can also utilize Autoruns, a detailed startup manager, to manage the Photos application and any other programs that have added themselves to the startup list.
Moreover, the previous version of the Microsoft Photos application can still be installed on Windows, even though it has been replaced by the newer one.

Suggestion: If you’re contemplating alternatives, you may want to explore lightweight photo viewers like IrfanView or FastStone Image Viewer. Though they may not possess some advanced attributes, they can satisfy your requirements without imposing excessive demands on your system.
