In accordance with last month’s anticipated security enhancement for Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft has released an additional update tailored for specific devices.
The update, designated as KB5001716: Update for Windows Update Service components, has been implemented on Windows 10 or 11 systems that are either out of service or nearing the conclusion of their support term.
This is not the first time this update has been issued; it was previously released in March 2024.
The update fulfills two main functions:
- To inform users about the current version in operation and its support state via alerts.
- To automatically fetch and install any new feature updates on the system.
On its official support page, Microsoft identifies the following Windows 10 and 11 versions affected by this update:
- Windows 10, from version 2004 to version 22H2 (release date beginning May 2020).
- Windows 11, version 21H2.
Consequently, all modern versions of Windows 10 are encompassed, as well as the initial iteration of Windows 11. Additional updates will also include Windows 11, version 22H2.
Automatic Update Installations
Microsoft mentions that following the installation of this update, “Windows may make an attempt to download and install feature updates to your device” if it “is nearing or has arrived at the end of support.”
However, it remains uncertain whether this automatic procedure will entail any transitions from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
Windows 10, version 22H2 signifies the ultimate feature update for Windows 10, indicating that no further version is available for Windows Update to install on the device.
The sole alternative, without incurring costs for Extended Security Updates, is to upgrade to Windows 11.
Nevertheless, not all Windows 10 devices meet the compatibility standards, and Microsoft is unlikely to ease the system requirements for Windows 11.
The notification feature of the update aims to alert users regarding update-related concerns impacting support.
Microsoft may leverage this notification system on Windows 10, version 22H2, to encourage users to transition to Windows 11, promote extended security updates, or motivate purchases of new PCs that are compatible with Windows 11.
These notifications are crafted to minimize interruptions to user activities. Microsoft asserts that alerts won’t appear while users are gaming, utilizing full-screen applications, or when quiet hours or focus assist mode are activated.
What’s Different from the March 2024 Release?
In this recent update, Microsoft has revised the list of supported Windows 10 and 11 versions that qualify for this update.
Older Windows 10 versions prior to version 2004 have been omitted from the supported operating systems roster.
This appears to be the only modification made.
What Actions Can You Take Regarding This Update? If you prefer to prevent the implementation of this update, you have the option to block it.
