YouTube Implements Stricter Measures to Deal With Ad-Blockers

Google has been conducting tests to tackle the issue of users utilizing ad-blockers on its YouTube platform. One of the initial tests involved informing users that ad-blockers are not allowed on YouTube. The alert offers users three options. The main options are to adjust the content blocker settings to enable ads on YouTube or subscribe to the paid service, YouTube Premium.

The third option is a small close icon located in the top right corner. Users can click on the ‘x’ icon to close the alert and continue using YouTube.

However, it seems that Google is now making this option less attractive to users. Instead of immediately displaying the close icon, YouTube now shows a timer in its place. This means that users who receive the alert have to wait for 30 to 60 seconds before they can close the entire alert and start using the site.

A screenshot of the updated alert was recently shared on Reddit.

It appears that users who employ various content blockers, including uBlock Origin, are affected by these alerts. However, the majority of users are not receiving these alerts, possibly because Google is still testing their effectiveness and response rate.

Interestingly, YouTube has also added the timer to the second alert that Google is currently testing on the site. Users may also come across the more severe alert that states “video player will be blocked after 3 videos,” which completely restricts access to the video player after watching three videos.

The initial version of this alert had an immediate close button. However, the updated version now includes the same timer, forcing users to wait for 30 to 60 seconds before they can close the alert and start watching the three videos allowed before the lockdown.

The third and final alert completely blocks access to YouTube and states that ad-blockers violate the site’s terms of service.

The recently shared instructions on bypassing YouTube’s anti-ad-blocker alerts may no longer be effective, as Google is continuously making modifications to them.

Users who encounter these alerts have a few options:

    • Try watching videos in Incognito Mode with content blocking enabled.
    • Use a different web browser that has a built-in ad-blocker, such as Brave Browser or Vivaldi, or one with a content blocker extension installed.
    • Utilize dedicated programs or apps like VLC Media Player, SMPlayer, FreeTube, YouTube ReVanced, or YouTube apps for Android.
    • Explore third-party apps like NewPipe or PeerTube.

Some content blockers will also receive regular updates to address bypassing the latest prompts on YouTube.

Google recently announced a price increase for YouTube Premium, raising the monthly subscription cost from $11.99 to $13.99.
